The weight will mostly depend on the filler you use, if you choose to use a filler.
Your are free to build it the way you want. If you want to save weight, make it hollow and/or use foam in some areas. If you want to be safe, use a filler to fill the part.
The strength of each parts you build will depend on the material used and how you use it. So you will need to make your own test to make sure it works and it's safe.
